I was reading about a university in South Korea rejecting applicants who had excellent test scores because of bullying incidents in their past. On one hand, good. There ought to be consequences for being horrible to other people. But on the other hand, sometimes being an asshole is an important stage in the long and difficult process of becoming less of an asshole. How does a university determine whether somebody is still the person they were five years ago? Is there an asshole entrance exam? And if someone has genuinely changed, what’s accomplished by punishing them now? I think about musicians who offered critical advice about my playing. When I was younger, I might have thought, fuck you. Who are you to tell me that? Years later, hearing the same criticism nearly brought me to tears. The criticism hadn’t changed. Bob had. Which makes me wonder how we distinguish between holding people accountable for their past and refusing to believe they have a future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
