In one of our last classes Jeremy thanked me for getting him to listen to Big Bill Broonzy. “It makes me feel like I’m alive a hundred years ago” he said. I too, love the transformative and transforming feelings from art. I asked if he ever saw Apocalypto and he replied what’s that?
The thing I loved about Pasolini’s films was how real they seemed. He was making a place for people to rediscover history as it was sans superfluous heavy handed narratives. Each time so stunning and one recognizes the undeniable, like the human sacrifice in Medea. All those ancients hanging around in their crazy clothes making pensive chants. Of course they need to sacrifice someone, how else will the Gods be pleased? The audience was left for themselves to understand or not understand.
Another film I liked like that was Tree of Wooden Clogs. It just put you there like time travel. Apocalypto was the most unexpected but died a quick death because Mel Gibson, was ubiquitously canceled during that period of his life. I watch a lot of films without knowing anything about them and this was one of them. Completely stunned. What I’m trying to say is I recommend Big Bill Broonzy, Medea and Apocalypto, highly.
