I don’t believe in reincarnation, but then the brown sugar dies and turns into a rock, and I add a fruit peel, an orange, most days, and hours later it’s alive again. Improvisation works exactly like that: you think the moment has fossilized, that the idea is gone, but you drop in one strange ingredient, one risk, and the whole thing revives itself as if it had been waiting for you.
