It became clear many years ago that one could hire virtuosos to tour with but if they also behaved like babies, it wouldn’t be worth it. Ninety-five percent of the work is being in close proximity to each other, we’re only on stage forty-five minutes of the day. Who wouldn’t rather work with people they enjoy, since it’s largely about hanging out.
Someone approached me to score their film and I found it not very interesting. After admitting my reaction I was told I shouldn’t be part of it unless I love it. Seemed too bad there wasn’t room to discuss other impressions but it wasn’t entirely unfamiliar. Earlier in life, I thought that way too – nobody plays with my toys unless they thank me for bringing my toys.
