In the LCBO on the overhead speaker system,  I heard Lotta Love by Neil Young. A contemporary artist covering it. Not the first time it has been covered, Nicolette Larson, the amazing singer with the longest hair in the world also did a cover of it. I can’t stand the sound of this cover – so unconnected to Neil Young’s version, so sterile and safe, the way of commercial song. Sometimes I try my hand. Some of my students, the ones with perfect modern pop voices I invite them to experiment with me. We add sugar or monosodium glutamate, yellow #33 and red #56. Proceed with caution. I might have a perfect storm one day. Part of it is whether the right ingredients were used in the production.
