My great uncle, the brother of my grandmother, liked him a lot and he was different. His name was Hi (Chaim), the Hebrew word for life. Many Jews named their sons Chaim, often later nicknamed to the English Hymie. He usually had a smirk and he was kind and playful. He was a traveling salesman, his living wasn’t easy. Which adults treat you like an equal and which boss you around or be condescending, stays in your memory when you’re a kid. Didn’t know until many years after he died that he was originally a sax player and used to gig in bands, probably in the 1930s. That explains it.
