trying to survive sounds

Something else about sound that confounds me, that animals often make sounds when they sense predators, dogs bark, birds cry, snakes hiss and yet if we were in the woods and a bear was walking by and the bear didn’t notice us, probably we would not alert the bear to our location even though we too are capable of screaming. I wonder about this instinct to make a sound. Hate viewing birds who are threatened by cats and yet are revealing themselves with each song. There also are more than a few stories of tiny yapping dogs chasing away large predators. Confuses me about nature’s programming. Maybe nature does this to help the predators be less hungry?
