A few years ago I learned when orchestral players audition they do so behind a curtain. The hiring committee doesn’t know what they look like only the sound they generate. Equity thinking maybe if the end result was the audience listening with their eyes closed. Might makes more sense for the assessment to include seeing how they get down when they rock out. Aren’t all of us with sight also entertained by watching the performer’s technique and quirks? Certain performers are amusing for what they look like while playing. Chuck Berry’s duck walk, Gord Downie’s trance, Glen Gould’s crazy low chair, Nina Hagen’s power isn’t just her voice if you never saw her.
