I usually don’t teach kids but I agreed recently. When the lesson started I asked what songs they liked and once they fessed up about something I could find on the computer, I listened to it then played them back a fragment of it. They were on board and excited but once we started to coordinate their fingers to play the melody, previous excitement waned, the effort necessary to play this song turned playing the piano into pulling a tooth. Like you know how to say hola so you start to learn Spanish but then there’s a bunch of other words to learn that aren’t as easy. Then I said let’s make something up. Kaboom, they were ready for that. Imitating each other, playing anything. I think then each lesson needs to regularly have sections of “let’s make something up”.
