Pretty weird to realize only a couple years ago there was a saxophone solo in Lady Madonna. That’s what gets me about artists who knock me out, I’m surprised. Surprised by their relationship with their art and how many dimensions I can find in their work. Who doesn’t like to be surprised and who doesn’t get bored by the lack of it? Think about this when I hear/ see popular artists with nebulous connections to the music. Do most bullshitters know they are bullshitters, that there are no surprises in what they call their work? Sometimes I’m ready to go on a rant about musical disappointments but then I recall if you speak ill of somebody popular, automatically a certain percentage defends them even attacks you. It is like you are giving them a reason to tweak abusive back atcha opinions. Isn’t that dynamic more interesting than talk about the artist that started it? The energy behind the people who defended Jian Ghomeshi during the first days of his bullshit being outed. Herb had a theory that people naturally need to be abusive, if you pay attention most conversations are about what’s wrong with this or that, that people spend a lot of time attacking as a way of socializing. I don’t know. His recording studio on Wright Ave was a favourite because of the Wurlitzer, my secret love. Good thing I had one when a teenager playing in a basement band and having to figure out Bloody Well Right by Supertramp. 50% of the problem was having a Wurlitzer. The guys were impressed that I figured out the solo (sort of). I didn’t really get into Supertramp as much as The Kinks. Lot more surprises in Arthur than Crime of The Century. Oh oh, crossed the line again.
