the distractions

At the beginning of the doc about Nina Simone from about four years ago, she’s playing to a room of three or four hundred people somewhere in Europe and somebody gets up to leave and she stops playing and addresses them. She gets upset even though the other 299 people are silently taking in the concert she’s hyper aware of the person leaving who isn’t necessarily leaving for any reason intended to insult her. It’s just she’s in that space of hyper listening when you perform. It’s necessary in order to get to where you want to go, to where they came to see you try and get to. It’s so easy to interpret unwanted noise as an attack or a criticism like when Keith Jarrett would get upset with the audience coughing. He knows it doesn’t make him more friends but he can’t help it. He just wants to get to that place that requires silence from the audience as well as the performer.
