son of a preacher man

“my song is about pigging out in the middle of the night with peanut butter. it’s the worst thing you can do, eat fats and then go back to sleep. i’m horrible.”
“are those the lyrics?”
“no. i wouldn’t sing it that way, the lyrics aren’t that direct.”
“why is that?”
“if I sing i’m pigging out on peanut butter in the middle of the night, i’m getting fatter every day and i hate myself…it wouldn’t reach as many people.”
“i don’t know about that, you might like star wars even though you never had a spaceship.”
“are you making fun of me?”
“i think people recognize someone’s real connection to what they say.”
“it isn’t funny.”
“i wasn’t laughing.”
“should i sing it?”
“go ahead.”
“I’m losing the fight, up at night, again I hate, taking the bait. let myself down, again a clown, it’s out of range, i’ll never change”
“what happens in the chorus?”
“i get more depressed”
“what happens in the bridge?”
“didn’t write one.”
“maybe you make a bridge in which you stop being down on your behaviour?”
“i wish.”
“that’s what a good bridge is, a new angle.”
“but that’s not my world, i don’t stop being down. i been stuck this way for years that’s why it’s easy to write about it”
“did you want my opinion?”
“yeah that’s why i’m here.”
“effective bridges have new ideas, go in unexpected directions.”
“but the rules are tell the truth.”
“what rules? says who?”
“you shouldn’t tell a lie.”
“you can say anything in a song. you can totally lie.”
“then it isn’t sincere.”
“seriously?”
“why are you asking me like that?”
“it’s about ideas. maybe your idea is to write about your actual experiences but you could also get across your actual experiences by making things up in the song. like fiction. you know like Of Mice And Men? there probably never was a real george and lenny but the idea of them resonates.”
”never heard of it.”
“Of Mice And Men?!”
“any others?”
“the only boy that could ever reach me, was the son of a preacher man. that doesn’t necessarily mean he really was the son of a preacher, but it makes you think about the feelings the singer has. makes you think about issues around intimacy, manipulation, hypocrisy. “
“you think she was lying?”
“not about how she felt.”
