I enjoyed the doc about the Rolling Thunder Revue very much. It was a moment I remember vividly, envying the life of a traveling musician putting on shows with friends who just seemed to tag along. There’s a moment where Dylan and Allen Ginsberg go to Kerouac’s grave and Dylan talks about On The Road and what a big deal it was to him. I’ve known so many people from that generation for whom it was cathartic. Sam Larkin used to regale me that way. On The Road changed his life and songwriting identity. Dylan also tells the interviewer that Ginsberg was a great dancer. Who knew? I like the business of honouring the dead, candles on the anniversary. When Jack Nicholson won the Oscar for As Good As It Gets he gave the most awesome acceptance speech. At the end he recited names, a bit of a confusing list starting with Miles Davis then Robert Mitchum then others I didn’t know and then concluded, “this is for them. They’re not here anymore but they’re in my heart.”
