I know someone with depression, some say they may be suicidal. In Socrates time they would say they that had a god inside them or a demon inside them that was the cause of their woe. Socrates did the most radical thing by trying to situate people to look at their own consciousness and how that might be worth exploring for understanding ourselves. They killed him for that. Like the premiere of the Rite of Spring over one hundred years ago, or Cecil Taylor’s career or John Cage placing blank staff paper over astronomical charts and then playing those as the notes of a composition – lot of people get hostile over their sense of what is music being challenged, instead of considering whether their beliefs were made of something real in the first place.
