While planning next year’s course, thought about an assignment exploring writing from someone else’s point of view, from a character and how that pushes the envelope. Examples I thought included Suzanne Vegas my name is Luka, Randy Newman’s Masterman and baby J, Joni Mitchell’s free man in Paris – even Taxman by George Harrison all could spark songwriting learning/ thoughts about writing in the first person when it isn’t in fact you. But some people find it offensive as if to say why are you trying to tell the story of someone else that isn’t you? Having mulled it over a few days, changed my mind and now thinking a better assignment is writing about the subject as if one is of two minds. One who is offended and one who applauds it. That way there is a 50/50 chance they will have to enter into the very same space I hoped to impress them with from song.
