the hole in the baton

A guy at conductor school used to take his lunch break and go to the park where he kept practising. He gesticulated his baton towards the geese and the red winged blackbirds and the great white egrit and the frogs and the flies, and the silk worms and the dogs being walked and the toddlers in strollers. He found the same questions ran through his mind which could be summed up in one sentence – would all of this proceed as it is even without me conducting?
