A lot of memorable concerts while growing up. One time it was Muddy Waters at the Playhouse in Winnipeg and Dave McLean opened. He told a story between songs about being pulled over by the police earlier and they told him the stop was because he looked nervous. So what makes you such a nervous young man they asked? And he replied, I’m opening the show tonight for Muddy Waters, you’d be fucking nervous too. Later, after Muddy Waters took the stage, the mayor, Bill Norrie, interrupted things to bestow a plaque unto the seventy something bluesman. Now McKinley Morganfield would officially be an honorary citizen of this town because Winnipeg is a Cree word meaning muddy waters. I still feel proud and privileged to have been from that city and in that space at that moment, especially for the view of his growing smile as he realized what the plaque was all about.
