If you put a fancy piece of music in front of a musician they can’t just play it and all its intricacies immediately. It has to be studied, practised and repeated. In a few days it might be played with confidence and ease. But the conscious mind acts as if it is the leader of the brain, as though consciousness is in control. Once the piece is learned, it isn’t consciousness that plays it. Everyone knows they can play a complicated piece while at the same time letting their consciousness drift elsewhere. The body knows how to play it now and consciousness is at the same time wondering whether the car will get a ticket since it was parked illegally or it’s thinking about flirting or what’s on sale. It’s not necessarily close to the piece that it is performing before an audience. Perhaps consciousness isn’t nearly as important as it tells itself it is. It might be the rest of the brain is laughing at the positioning of consciousness, believing when it looks in the mirror that it is seeing itself instead of just parts of the body.
