Sometimes I take a break from whatever I’m doing at the Tranzac and walk down the street to the Future Bakery, drink tea and watch people then head back to work. One time I recognized Brent Carver there, maybe 10 years ago. I only read about his greatness and his golden voice but never saw him in a play. I approached him and asked if he was who I thought he was and he said yes and invited me to join him. He didn’t live in Toronto but was attending a rehearsal around the corner. He asked about what I do, it was a fun exchange about being artists and navigating business. It happened again four years ago, the same place. I walked up, like a few years before and said sorry I’m late for the meeting and without skipping a beat he smiled and said there’s your chair Bob. We had a similar exchange as last time. It felt backwards, us meeting twice and talking about work without actually experiencing anything about each other’s work. I was expecting to be blown away one day when I would hear/ see him on stage.
