and whiskers on kittens

There was a squirrel in High Park eating a peanut. I watched it’s little claws hold the peanut in prayer position like a vice and it’s tiny mouth surgically removed bits and bits, whizzing back and forth like an electric typewriter while keeping eyes on the man with the blue tooth headphones. The squirrel did all this while being on a branch swaying in the breeze. At first I thought its brain was all about taking apart the peanut or balancing on the moving branch or being vigilant against any sudden moves by me. Then I realized what’s really in control of all of that is a deeper instinctual part, the hunger part, the belly. Once the belly is full all those other parts will dissolve. The hunger was actually in control of the manifestation of all those other things. When John Coltrane blows on My Favourite Things, not everyone understands what’s in his head isn’t the cascading sounds we are hearing. His inner ear is replaying/ remembering Julie Andrews and her straight Disney melody.
