Groups of two or three students get into seven groups and each selects one record from a list of twenty. There are seven presentations to schedule between now and Christmas. Nobody ever picks Sail Away by Randy Newman; their loss. Usually, they go for the famous contemporary. The K-pop and Kendrick Lamar records were the first gone. Sort of wish I could give them a mark if they pick one of my faves. Made two soups in a row that were amazing and I think it was because I used the berbere spice from the Ethiopian store. I also added kim chee and ginger so it is not so easy to distill which ingredient deserves the Juno. Slowly cook leeks, broccoli, kale and spinach then obliterate them in the fancy blender whose motor rivals a motorcycle and makes everyone nearby yell in my direction. No different than practicing piano in an earlier lifetime. A student wrote me about her songwriting and her dying relative and world politics and God and global warming. I answered all her questions best I could but couldn’t help noticing Sail Away has songs that answer each issue better. I liked imagining her discovering the worth of those songs but you can’t force discovery, can only encourage experimentation.
