bum bum

Trying to go to sleep but made the mistake of looking at Netflix just to double check the Nina Simone film which is an upcoming assignment to the students to review, just to refresh my memory for future questions when I noticed an old film I couldn’t resist peeking at again. Certain old films like certain old songs gracefully endure for all time. Had to see Kobayashi again as politically incorrect as it was, Peter Postlethwaite, one of the greatest ever, dead so young, maybe 10 years ago. I had forgotten Giancarlo Esposito was also in the Usual Suspects. The assignment this week is listening to songs which either got artists jailed or got other people released from jail. Zombie by Fela Kuti, John Sinclair by John Lennon, Mother of God Chase Putin away by Pussy Riot and my favourite Hurricane by Bob Dylan. In my mind, certain years are represented by albums. Desire by Dylan is forever 1976, starting side one with Hurricane. my brother was a fanatic fan and even obtained a 45 version with a photo of Ruben Carter on it, an old boxing photo. Earlier this evening, wrote to Milford Graves after Daniel told me about his work blowing up recordings of heartbeats. So much that one can decipher melodic elements between the attack and decay. For the PhD business, one is suppose to eventually put together a panel and I’m thinking of hanging the research on a wider study of melodicism. Would be as cool as seeing Pete Postlethwaite again or getting someone out of jail from a song, to have someone like Milfred Graves (who also played with Albert Ayler) on my panel.
