bad enough

If you don’t want to write the same song over and over then you have to study what happens that keeps you from the creating something new, otherwise there you go again. I know an artist who does this. The same song over and over – about women who never appreciated him, it’s weird. His point of view is complaining and immature but he has fans who like it or at least they did the first time, some are even women. If I was in the studio with him, my first rule would be you can’t write anything like that, now let’s see what happens to your song writing. The big assignment in my song writing class was due the other day. Write a bad song. As the students start to understand what’s being asked of them, usually they get excited and animated. I’m impatient to hear the results it’s one of my favourite times of the year. Some think it’s about being cacophonous but some grasp the fact that it’s about subjectivity. Most never seem to realize you can’t fail this assignment as long as you hand it in, nobody can say it wasn’t bad enough. Today is also the American election and everyone knows it probably will be what nuclear scientists call a shit show. I was blindsided like the rest of the world, when Trump won last time. I realize now it’s possible it will be repeated or to put it another way, the same dynamics are at play again. Just like last time, it looks like it is improbable. Looks like most people are not oriented towards Trump….but that’s exactly how it looked before. There’s something to be said about remembering the signs which doesn’t necessarily mean anyone knows in advance anything except keep your arrogance about the certainty of the future in check. You really could die today just crossing the street. You really could write the same song again unless you intentionally engage in interrupting your own pattern.
