echo of Ngugi Wa Thiongo

Some of the song writing students speak up about the problem of selling out as if this is something one needs to be concerned with, when one is studying the craft of song and young and broke and unknown. In my own way, I assure them this is not an actual problem they face but they are convinced. It’s as though they love discussing how incorruptible they are or love implying nobody could succeed in branding them one way or the other, if they didn’t agree to it. I like listening from my special slot, as the teacher from the University, where I doubt that I keep this job if my response is different than the published scruples of the place that employs me.
