There was a discussion in class two months ago, at times more like a fight, about the purpose of the song writer or the artist. The student who was also in theatre had the response I liked most. He quoted David Mamet, “The purpose of art is to delight us: certain men and women (no smarter than you or I) whose art can delight us have been given dispensation from going out and fetching water and carrying wood. It’s no more elaborate than that.”
