sudden death

After significant storms you see fallen trees the next day through the vast stretches of forest/ park but nothing like that happened in recent days. So, it was surprising to come upon a 25 meter old tree now made horizontal overnight, even crashed into part of the fence. I looked around but everything undisturbed. No warning, break at the base. Captivating, to see what lived in the dark now exposed. Wonder how long it was in distress, trying to balance this vulnerability and keep death at bay. People die unexpectedly young, sometimes even children, no warning. A reminder of the illusion we live together. At Fat Albert’s open stage, there was a regular named Roger who died suddenly, he was in his early thirties, heart attack in his sleep they said. He played songs with open tunings and he had one song with a lyric about bad news being what everyone seeks. How songs are all about bad news, newspapers and gossip too. I thought the point of his song was questioning how people en masse are attracted to being disturbed. That the news channels wouldn’t quite work if they were reporting goodness in each dispatch. Seemed like a hit to me. Didn’t live long enough to make a record so it’s just on high rotation internally.
