I’m starting to think I had it all wrong and life isn’t just about Little Walter and Sonny Terry. Fortunately through older brotherness, my childhood also featured Howlin’ Wolf, but only recently realized his harp work was just as stellar, maybe more so, Thanktube Youtube. And then somewhere someone told me Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits both were trying to do Howlin’ Wolf, not something I ever heard before but whoever said so said it like it’s a fact that they admit in interviews. Whatever, doesn’t matter, but there’s something forever different when you find the earlier source. Keith Jarrett vs. George Winston, Sharon Jones vs. Amy Winehouse, Aubrey Beardsley vs. Klaus Voorman. Stumbled onto a blog explaining every face on the Sgt. Pepper’s cover (including Aubrey Beardsley), didn’t realize Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Einstein, Aleister Crowley, Marelena Deitrich, Stockhuasen, Carl Jung, Tony Curtis, Oscar Wilde, Shirley Temple, Stuart Sutcliffe & Lewis Carroll are also all there. There used to be many blues jam sessions where one could try their luck sitting in. Post Covid I hope to find such places, if they exist still, and there I would try my luck if I can take what I hear of my hero harpists and try being 5% as interesting.
