while reading audre lorde’s essay on being in russia i was moved most when she reached the conclusion following asking about jews and asking about blacks, that one always has to just accept that no one is going to help you or come save you. you are on your own and it is frightening (that’s my words not hers) frightening because it’s relief to believe the calvary is on their way. also liked the part between her and the indigenous woman from up north, from a place where there are 14,000 people like her left and how she and lorde connect without language. i played in germany with eugene chadbourne, my fave moment was when i left the group and wandered into a space where there was a grand piano and some youth who seemed like hippie squatters and we didn’t speak any same language except music.
