an interesting aspect of raising kids or knowing kids is realizing everyone starts from scratch. you can’t just have wisdom, or have talent as they say, but each of us has to learn everything from the beginning and if you really want to be a helper to someone who doesn’t yet know what you know you have to smile at the space between knowing and not knowing. you could grimace and be cross but it’ll make even less sense to the learner. i had a piano teacher as a little kid, she made threats when i made errors, i was afraid and quit music. i wish it was unusual to say someone like that was called a teacher. the best ones are those not threatened by showing understanding and kindness. nick lowe might do well to try writing something like that.
