I asked them to listen to four songs before the next class. Songs with surprises that turn the song inside out. Not sure it is teachable but hoping it is shareable and enough enthusiasm to spark something. A Boy Named Sue, Lola, The Great Pretender and Stan by Eminem. Then thought about how could one design an exercise to develop it. Thinking of asking them to imagine they have a box and inside the box is a frog, then write a verse about the box but don’t reveal there is a frog inside it.
