In recording studios I compare myself to the first people I met who were called producers. Part of their labour was considering every moment, attention to each hi hat hit, each singer’s inhalation, each guitar strum etc. Not every producer thinks that way but focusing on microscopic details is like a drug and arguably useful in the extreme for the final sound. I took it upon myself to try. It’s just a musical exercise, pourquoi pas? This changed my listening, which doesn’t mean I like the people who need to discredit any audible error. It means enjoying more than one way to listen back. I heard mistakes today while listening to a recording while walking through High Park. I grew up with Otis Spann’s records, even though for me he is a God, I never noticed clams before. Made me feel like a million bucks! Like he too was mortal, maybe.
