the creative hero

I finished the book about A Tribe Called Quest by Hannif Abdurraquib. He sure is/was in love with ATCQ. Makes me think of things I have been in love with, and how satisfying it might be to write a whole book about it yet how overwhelming. I’m not as amazed as he is, but I did learn a bunch of things which I’ll think on and bring to future classes possibly. My favourite parts were realizing more about Busta Rhymes than I previously knew from Rich Marsella’s internship at Metalworks and learning more about De La Soul. Picked up a recent one of their records and was pleasantly surprised to hear David Byrne on it. Another fave part was enjoying the adventurous space of rap from the 90s or maybe enjoying the vibe of people who believe they are making something for the first time always has that type of feel. It feels insular reading this book but it’s a universal thing. Easy to go backwards tracing movements defining themselves as inventors of something that never happened before, but isn’t it just getting high off being creative, whether Queen Latifah or The Velvet Underground or The Ronettes or The Del Vikings or Stockhausen or Artie Shaw or Duke Ellington or Prokofiev or Liszt.
