The students are starting to hand in their “write a bad song” assignment. Predictably there are people being out of tune or cacophonous and that’s cool, though sometimes someone knocks it out of the ballpark and interprets something horrible as the meaning of a bad song, which I’m a little more partial to, still, I respect whatever they submit. A lot of them never seem to grasp how can I fault anyone with not writing something bad enough?

I’d be interested in hearing more about what you think makes a “bad song.”
Aside from rap “songs,” which I’ve tried to give a chance to but they irritate me immediately so off goes the radio, there is one song that I find the most bad song I’ve ever heard. It became popular as a wedding first-dance song and it’s horrible, absolutely horrible. I’m not a musician so what do I know? Just that it grated on my nerves whenever I heard it.
It started out “On this day, we …” and somewhere in there was “And forever… forever …” Bleeeechhhh.
The melody was terrible. I didn’t even try judging the words.
Oy.
