communista

Way to go Lina Wertmüller, set the world on fire. There was a scene in the Seven Beauties where two criminals meet during world war two. One is Giancarlo Gianinni who tried to join the Mafia by committing a vulgar murder. He is sentenced to three years in a mental institution. He’s in a holding cell with a small old man in granny glasses. He brags about his crime, then challenges the old man how long he’s going to jail for, to which he answers thirty years. Upon hearing that, Gianinni’s eye brows reach the ceiling, what despicable crime did the little guy do he asks solemnly. “communista” he answers unemotionally. And then there’s the nylon string guitar in Swept Away. So amazing. I didn’t understand Swept Away the first time I saw it, but I loved it and went again. Years later I expected to enjoy it a third time, but maybe being older, I saw it different. It was amazing still but different reasons.
