say whatever you want in a song

Starting to get feedback from my classmates on my proposal which is about a musician who wrote a song about a young man who had a shitty relationship with his father and after the young man wrote a critical letter to his father, Dad replied in agreement an apology kind of. It sounded like a moment of healing but as it turns out the young man later took his own life. I didn’t know that backstory when I became interested in the song but when I did, it only made everything even more compelling. As it turns out, my classmates, suggest I eliminate this aspect of the storytelling (it’s a podcast proposal) because they say it is unfair of the songwriter to write about the young man’s death. They say it isn’t his story to tell. The classes are on Zoom because of the pandemic so I do not have the opportunity to throw pies in their faces.
