worst part, best part

Tricky, how to organize 20 – 30 students into having useful experiences but I also like the problem. One thing tickled me from attending the Bernadine Evaristo Q&A online at the Calgary Library last week, her position on improvising, that she believes just describing character leads to stories emerging and completing themselves. On some level I know it too and think of Randy Newman, the poster child for venturing out in characters in song. So brave to follow the mind of the other even if it makes the singer appear offensive, leaving the audience to be smart enough to get past their wokeness. I wrote her and asked if we could do an interview on improvising for the improv journal at school. I interviewed Jonnie Bakan in Feb about Freddie Stone for that reason too and soon will speak with rapper Coleman Hughes. Maybe I should have the students conduct interviews as well, maybe we should start in the classroom where they interview each other to prepare trying to obtain interviews from college radio djs. What’s concerning is how much to put in their court and how to deal with those who might not do the work. The worst part about being the boss is supplying negative judgements. The best part is sensing someone set free.
