I recorded the interview with Coleman Hughes so that I would not misquote and when I watched it back I clearly saw my older brother Howie’s personality present in how I talk to people. It frightens me and fascinates me. Partly why I read Charles Murray’s book, Human Diversity, last month and partly what I noticed after that film about Bobby Fischer, a grand master at 14 and whose father, Paul Nemenyi (who didn’t raise him), won the Hungarian national mathematics competition at 17. If there’s something transferable from parent to child I don’t think it is the actual content of the activity as much as a a disposition towards the architecture of that structure. I bet one of Thelonious Monk’s parents liked walking in circles.
