I interviewed Anne Bourne for the next issue of the improvisation journal out of Guelph Improv Notes and she had a lot of great stories. My favourite was her account playing with Freddie Stone which also was her first time improvising following her first life as a classically trained cellist. This group of 4 – 6 players were improvising and she described Freddie being like Miles Davis and singing melodies to the players. He also directed people to start or stop. During one piece he leaned into her and said “it would be good if you took a solo” and she froze. No one ever asked her to solo before, she didn’t know what to do, panic set in she stayed quiet. The song continued, eventually Freddie returned, leaned in and this time said “whatever you do, don’t solo” and kaboom! She couldn’t stop herself jumping in and exploding dynamically.
