I might have seen the Seventh Seal long ago but never studied much of Ingmar Bergman’s films though I know Woody Allen cites him as a big influence. I started watching Autumn Sonata, it’s very amazing. Immediately you can recognize styles borrowed by Woody Allen and it’s sort of funny but even more interesting is Ingrid Bergman and the story of a concert pianist and her daughter who is not as accomplished. And Bergman’s character’s bullshit, the type of musician who speaks with authority about how a dead composer expects their music to be played. I love those pointless insistent meaningless voices of authority. Ever since I remember I think I’ve been living with one. Jean-Luc Goddard died recently, I tried to watch his films when I was younger but couldn’t get through them. It might be different now. I did see 1 + 1 Sympathy For The Devil which, like the others was impossible for me to follow but also stunning for actual footage of them doing “the version”. A nice surprise two years ago when I read the Master and Margarita finding out it was Jagger’s inspiration for speaking as Lucifer in the first person.
