people united

I’m in Winnipeg visiting my mother. Today, we went to the Human Rights Museum and it was amazing not only for the important content but for someone who made millions in their life, Izzy Asper, to leave it for humanity instead of a giant sculpture of their autograph. This is no Trump Tower or Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, no fanfare about the greatness of the money backer. Just a stimulating place, interactive displays, impressive research, creative designs. The rental car guy offered winter tires if I paid extra, and I said no it’s ok. It’s a tiny car, cheapest one I could get. I was so certain I could drive better than anyone from Toronto. I got stuck tonight in a parking lot but two guys seeing me looking so foolish, quickly came to my rescue. A good bookend to a day at the Human Rights Museum. A lot of my favourite songs about human rights come from John Lennon: Give Peace a Chance, Revolution, Imagine – but my fave is by the piano God, Fredric Rzewski, and his Variations on The People United Will Never be Defeated. Staggering. Would have been awesome in the background of the museum.
