Some musicians think cacophony is a unique space of noise, discordant sound, but doesn’t cacophony reflect nature more realistically than melodicism? Is the history of the world chaos, murder and destruction or is it everything just peachy? I didn’t know what to think of John Cage’s responses when I first read interviews with him and the interviewer comments that Cage minds not the sounds of traffic or blaring vacuum cleaners, even implied they are the natural music of life in the city. I thought he was playing a game, maybe he was but now I think it was a serious game, the serious attention of being a compassionate listener/ audience towards the present.
