The album presentation today was the album Ivan by Tyler the Creator. It is the only record I added this semester that I am not knowledgeable of. I added it because I noticed a very interesting mix of students from semesters past who cited it as inspiration. I figured they’re probably onto something an old guy like me doesn’t yet get. Earlier we did an exercise where I put them in pairs, facing each other. First they write a haiku or verse about the person they are facing, something which they will not share with them, something about whatever are their impressions or observations, no judgement. Next I supply pencil and paper and they draw the person. Third, they write about them again. Then we compare writing. The difference between the first and second writing. Most had the experience I hoped for, more details resulted after drawing, after developing a relationship, after feeling they knew what they were writing about.
