Sometimes I meet people who want to take lessons and confess they can’t improvise. They say things like I don’t know how you do it. Naturally, I try to get them to improvise in some simple low stakes way. Usually, after they take part I assume they will now have an immediate epiphany and usually they do not. The thing is they did just improvise plus our conversation is an improvisation as were the clothes they put on this morning and whatever they had for dinner. No matter what I say or what fun they had in the exercise, a certain person doesn’t get it. I used to find that maddening, but after living a little longer it is clear that life has different speeds. They might get it tomorrow, next year or maybe never at all, equally fair improvisational outcomes.
