Sometimes I have to work on just a sentence over a long period of time. A weird problem but also enjoyable, assuming I get it right, itch gone. Try explaining the benefits of free writing to the yawning people in class and wonder who (or if anyone) should remember these exchanges one day. I have little soundbites and videos swirling round corners of mind, various once-upon-a-times that influenced all I like doing. Those teachers back then, would not necessarily know what they said would resonate with me over years, like the time Arnold told our staff meeting a group moves as fast as its slowest member or when Casey said to Anne about my improvising you can’t teach someone how to do that or in The World According to Garp when John Irving wrote a character who realized you get more respect from shocking someone than all the kindness, consideration or pleading you might have first tried.
