I watched the electronic music show. It was full. People paid good money. Both acts consisted of solo people standing on stage in front of a midi keyboard connected to samplers, mixers and units that allows one to alter a sample that is in a hold pattern. The musicians played with one finger mostly, triggering sequences of found voices or found sounds or previously generated musics or sounds, sometimes at high complex velocities while they themselves were mostly still and moving one finger at a time, minimally. I believe they largely are improvising and that people enjoy the fact that they are improvising. It is very popular and very meaningful to everyone there. I think it probably is the future too, maybe precisely because of what it is not. Not about the skill of musicianship but rather the pretense that this sculpting electronics is a unique skill. It is very odd to me. I believe most musicians can play the same toys with more or less same results. I think these things are largely about fashion and/ or hype. One of the acts even started by reminding everyone that their record was on that cool label they all heard of, right? I think of the Korova milk bar in A Clockwork Orange. Totally the future.
