Finished Margaret Atwood’s The Heart Goes Last and as usual the ending was fantastic. She is so good. I want to write her fan mail and maybe I will. The book I am writing for school will never be as good but then again she had an advantage, starting at least fifty years before me. I am rewinding her book and thinking about the structure and the twists and the development. I try to do that with most stories in order to help myself think more structurally about my own work. I also bought some of the Masterclass videos online, the ones by different authors or musicians I admire. An opening statement she made in her video stood out for me. She said your job is very simple, make the reader turn the page. It is true also in songwriting. Make the listener want to keep listening.
