from one to the next

In yesterday’s class there was an album presentation of Desire by Bob Dylan. It led to a talk about Hurricane the song. That led to a talk about Rubin Carter serving twenty years for a crime he was later found not guilty of. That led to a discussion about wrongfully convicted people and the organization Carter founded in Toronto for wrongly convicted people. That led to a conversation about whether convictions happens more to black men and if corruption and racism are systemic or not. That led to a conversation about Candace Owens, BLM and Roland Fryer which led to a conversation about my Facebook post using the word “woke” and replies that followed. That led to students wanting to see for themselves so I put it on the projector. That led to a discussion of all the whole thread and comments from Facebook, Instagram, X and my website and them wanting to know who was this person or that person and what would I do about whoever likes me or hates me. That led to a discussion about Tyler The Creator, Amala Ekpunobi, Bella Shmurda and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Then the class was out of time but not before they voted on whether I should change my initial post. That was their idea. They wanted me to try and piss people off more. It was good timing because this week’s assignment is the Julie Bindel article where she addresses liking early Snoop Dog music and all the heat she gets for an opinion about one’s personal entertainment. They are supposed to check their own playlists and discuss if there is anything there that might make people cancel them. I have not had a student yet that did not love this assignment.
