Nothing like embarrassment to make people change their tune, but is it not embarrassing that that is what it takes instead of critical thought? In class someone addressed British artist FKA Twig and the Calvin Klein advertisement she did. How the British advertising board (ASA) banned it. They said it was due to her being objectified. I agree that sexy pictures of people lend the viewer towards objectification but is that new? How can anyone control or pretend to control the mind of the viewer? They mounted a campaign against Calvin Klein for sexualizing her and claimed the advertisement was offensive because it was about her body instead of the clothes being sold.
Then the model artist herself, FKA Twig, told the advertising council to fuck off because it is her body and her narrative. From her view they are silencing a woman who was trying to follow in the tradition of women she admired like Josephine Baker and Grace Slick. Her fans got involved and there was public outcry. The insinuation they were racist for stopping her from doing what she was doing was too much and the ASA caved, said excuse us for trying to promote our view, we realize now it’s all ok, please proceed as you were before. I love the fights over who is considered correct and who is incorrect because the pointlessness of believing in only one side. The recognition of two coexisting is what I seek from the being in the musician business.
