I interviewed Jen Claveau for my upcoming class because she seems on fire about understanding marketing for musicians. In the long run it is a job, a full time job, a full time business job and a musician who does that full time will probably no longer be a musician because all their time is being in business. It reminds me of reading Jan cox years ago explain why you should not go into the business of what you love or at least realize if you do there is a serious risk of spoiling the thing you love. For instance if you love books and open a book store now you have to think about selling books you don’t even like in order to make the rent. You might encourage people to buy things you do not support – but they sell. You are in the business of making money which is not the business of loving books. So true for being a musician. I hope the future students this year enjoy thinking about those differences.
