One of the survey questions I received from the online class of 80 students was how do I get my music to big shots? A great question that makes me think about successes and failures I know personally. Many more failures but it only takes one major success to coast a long time afterwards. Isn’t that right Enya? I can’t actually answer their question because it isn’t what’s 27 + 18? The answer to this question is more like answering how do I win at poker? An experienced player, presuming they are any good, would say develop your skill. I decided to share stories with them. Stories of success and failure which demonstrate the abstract timeline in store for anyone trying to do this. Van Gogh dies never having sold a painting and now his used Kleenex is worth a million. Make that two million. I’m including videos of Kanye West explaining how his rapping eventually was taken seriously, how Jerry Weintraub eventually got Colonel Tom Parker to agree on giving Jerry a chance, and even after David Foster rejected Something to Talk About for Anne Murray, Shirley Eikhard continued to try selling it and more than ten years later scores with Bonnie Raitt. You have to be able to live with abstract timelines if this is your way.
